Many people are in outrage after Sir Keir Starmer’s new announcement of getting rid of bus fare caps meaning prices are increasing in England.
Today, a multitude of bus fares in England cost no more than £2.
This is all because the last Conservative Party introduced a cap on the cost of bus prices.
This was highly beneficial in supporting those who were and are struggling with the cost of living crisis.
Furthermore, it was used in encouraging people to use buses after Covid-19.
The newly elected Labour government has declared that they will be getting rid of this cap and buses prices will be increasing from £2 to £3.
This is because the department for transport believes that this cap is not financially sustainable and will save the government a lot of money.
Overall, Brits are left furious at the rise in prices by 50%. This will be capped until the end of 2025.
In addition to this, it raises many consequences regarding the drastic change in prices of transport that the lower and working class are very reliant on.
New research from London TravelWatch found that 69% of Londoners who earn less than £20,000 per year use the bus once a week.
Therefore, this price increase will affect them drastically.
Those who travel to and from by bus 5 times a week will be required to spend an extra £40 each month which many households do not have.
Furthermore, the UK Parliament states that young adults who age from 17 – 39 years old are more reliant on buses.
These group of people use this transport to go to work and attend studies therefore increasing a strain on their budgets.
Not only are university tuitions rising but being a student in the UK is becoming increasingly expensive.
A student in Year 11 Annie says “I think the increase of the bus price is quite a difficult choice to make because transport is something a lot of people rely on in daily life to get round to places they need to go - Some people can’t afford cars and I would say the majority of people use transport and so the increase will eventually stack up to a lot more money over time.”
As a whole, we will see the consequences gradually stand out as this change will affect many individuals and families across England.
