Between the 18th to the 24th of October, City Of London Freemen's school organised a school trip to America.

It was primarily focused on history and politics students so the itinerary was based on this.

As one of the students attending the trip, I got to experience a new country alongside the rest of my peers.

To conclude the trip, we spent a few days in New York, an incredible metropolis which has left a lasting impact on me.

From seeing the sights at the top of the Empire State Building to exploring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, my most memorable experience was the touching 9/11 memorial site and exhibition which left me and others on the trip in tears.

Despite being an unfamiliar topic to me which can often be brushed over by the younger generation and non Americans, it resounded with me heavily and will be something I will remember forever.

As you walk in, you are given the chance to start from the basement or ‘bedrock’ which still contains the original foundations of the towers.

This felt especially surreal to me as it felt I could experience it and the tragedy came to life.

Aside from numerous historical objects such as the ‘Survivors Staircase’, the most impactful area of the exhibition for me was the rooms filled with pictures of the victims in which I was overwhelmed with the great loss of life and hit by emotion.

It was heartbreaking to read countless stories of love and hope from the victims and their lives, knowing that they did not get to fulfil their dreams.

Also displayed were objects such as wedding rings or police badges used to help rescue victims, showcasing their instinctive bravery and selflessness.

I would strongly suggest to others visiting the city to go see this as it was a very moving and informative museum.

A fellow peer Isabella N. Stated that ‘It made (me) feel heartbroken and acknowledge the historic significance of those days.‘

To summarise, America left a very positive impression on me and I am very grateful I got to experience this trip.

I would recommend for anyone especially students of the humanities studying American history and politics to visit as it really helps to visualise events which you may be studying.
