On November 2nd 2024, I had the exciting opportunity of seeing MJ the Musical at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Set in 1992, the musical revolves around the build-up to Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour, giving an insight into the singer’s creative process, dedication and hidden personal strife at the time.

One of the things I think is best about MJ the Musical is that it honours Michael Jackson for the musician he was.

Nowadays, modern biographical media can be negative, focusing less on the good that people have brought to the world through their artistry.

However, with this production being a jukebox musical, where popular MJ songs feature instead of songs by others, we remember the imaginative genius that he possessed as an individual.

Hits like "Beat It" and "Man in the Mirror" get their time in the spotlight, played in full and accompanied with impressive sets.

Through his music, I feel a greater admiration for Jackson's work, rather than scrutinising the troubles that overshadow his talent.

The show also cleverly uses said songs to symbolise deeper meanings.

"Thriller", famous for its horror theme and energetic beat, represents Michael's struggle to overcome the fears and pressure of being a celebrity.

Likewise, "They Don't Care About Us" depicts the constant battle between reality and fake news, along with the challenges it brings.

Finally, the ending track, "Black or White", brings the musical to a powerful close, spreading a significant message of unity and love that resonates with all.

In my opinion, Myles Frost, who plays Michael Jackson, is definitely the star of the show.

He not only brings the story to life, but sincerely captures Michael's spirit and character.

Despite the weight of portraying this notable singer, Frost flawlessly imitates MJ, from the iconic voice to the detailed dances.

A distinct moment for me was when Frost performed a solo to "Billie Jean", entertaining and amazing every member of the audience.

He has such a likeness to the real Michael Jackson when embodying him that it is clear that there is no better actor for this role.

Myles Frost has truly warranted any praise that makes himself and the production so strikingly brilliant.

Another actress who has earned recognition is Phebe Edwards, who plays Katherine Jackson.

Whilst not playing the main part, her vocals are outstanding beyond belief.

Every note and harmony was perfect, which massively contributed to the overall display.

Edwards deserves a lot more credit than she gets for her wonderful, melodic feature in the musical.

As someone who doesn’t particularly like musicals, MJ the Musical has sparked a profound appreciation for theatre within me.

The show sparked my eagerness, kept me hooked throughout, and I marvelled at it all right up to the curtain call.

It was a phenomenal experience that I will never forget and fully recommend to everyone.

After this event, I believe that MJ the Musical is one of the most exceptional pieces of performing art to ever be produced.
