Throughout childhood, we are shown various forms of images, such as movies, cartoons, as well as objects for us to touch, and play around with.

The images that we see as infants create an imagination that differentiates us from people, it shapes the way one sees the world, whether that be through fantasy land, or a world full of chaos.

It also helps us in our daily lives, such as problem solving, empathy, and even scientific inventions!

However, could our minds be shortening the distance between reality and imagination so much so that we cannot tell the difference?

Problem solving is a daily task that every individual has experienced, whether that be through mathematics or figuring out how to put things together. Humans subconsciously use our imagination through problem solving, mainly through images.

We also use our imagination when empathising with someone, to put ourselves in their shoes, to imagine how it would feel to be in their position.

This makes us softer, more considerate people, maturing our mindsets. Furthermore, it can help us see the world in a more positive light, helping us get through the difficulties of the day.

However, our imaginations can only go so far.

It can be deemed as an escape route to the harsh reality of the world, but there is a certain extent to how far one should go.

As a result, the line between reality and imagination blurs, creating an unrealistic world – a world where there are no consequences for actions, a world where nothing truly matters.

This can disassociate one from society and the active world, impacting mental health, and distorting their view on reality, causing some to act in ways that they would not before, almost creating an alternate personality.

These confounding views can be avoided by practicing mindfulness.

To practice mindfulness is simple, and there are many ways which differ from person to person.

A popular one is by meditating.

This helps one focus on their breathing, and the different components that make up the human body, such as our organs, skin, and hands.

By focusing on these, one can be relaxed, and stress free, therefore developing a positive mental health.

Being able use our imagination in unique ways pieces who we are as individual beings, and should not be discouraged.

It is imperative that we do not mix up the imaginative world with the real one, as it can cause problems that certainly do have a consequence.
