A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of having a chat with Matthew Rowland, a seasoned West End performer.
He has starred in many iconic shows, such as Taboo, Cats, Matilda, and more.
After tackling the role of Mr Wormwood in Matilda, he is about to embark on a tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as the Assistant Director and Choreographer.
Here is what he had to say about his career and the theatre industry…
1. What inspired you to become a performing artist?
I've always been drawn to storytelling, and musical theatre was the perfect blend of music, movement, and narrative for me. Growing up, I remember watching musicals with my family and feeling completely transported into those incredible worlds. Seeing the impact that performance could have on people sparked a desire in me to create that same magic and connection for others.
2. Who were your biggest influences or mentors in your career?
I was very lucky to have plenty of mentors along the way—directors, coaches, and fellow performers—who have been so generous with their guidance and advice, shaping me both as an artist and as a professional. My family always showed me such support in being creative and doing a job that I loved. My grandad bought me my first ever piano. I was always performing shows at home and making programmes and pretend tickets.
3. What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to break into the industry?
Be persistent and open to learning at every opportunity. The industry can be challenging, and rejection is part of the journey, but every experience helps you grow. Find ways to keep honing your craft, whether through classes, workshops, or personal practice, and surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your passion.
4. Are there any projects or collaborations you’re currently excited about?
Yes, I’m currently working on the Joseph UK Tour as the Assistant Director and Choreographer and it’s been exciting to work with such a fabulous creative team. Having performed in the show before, it is a great new challenge for me to be on the other side of the table responsible for getting the show ready for audiences.
5. If you could work with any artist or company, who would it be and why?
That’s a tough one! I’d love the chance to work creatively on a Stephen Sondheim production or a completely new show from day one. I am always inspired by the rehearsal process and it is the “making” that always feels very exciting. I would work with Debbie Isitt (creator of Nativity) again in a heartbeat. Debbie has such an amazing process of basically using the script as a very loose structure, and asking her actors to find their own unique take on the characters and the lines they say! When I was in Nativity she was so open to new ideas that we put in a brand new song for my character which I wrote with the Musical Director! Hearing that for the first time with a full band was such an incredible moment.
I think it is safe to say that we are all excited to see what he does next!
