When desperate to finish a last-minute essay, tv-series or book, it is easy to forget about sleep. Sleeping is an important factor in a person’s overall wellbeing and health. Though often neglected, sleep has many positive benefits on the human body and when this is understood, sleeping enough should become a priority in our lives.
Having a good nights sleep can help you have:
- Better productivity and concentration.
- Lower risk at heart disease
- Stronger Immune system
These are only a few of the amazing benefits a good night sleep has on our body.
According to the CDC, this is approximately how much the following age groups should have:
Newborns (0–3 months): 14–17 hours
Infants (4–12 months): 12–16 hours
Toddler (1–2 years): 11–14 hours
Preschool (3–5 years): 10–13 hours
School-age (6–12 years): 9–12 hours
Teen (13–18 years): 8–10 hours
Adult (18–60 years): 7-plus hours
Adult (61–64 years): 7–9 hours
Adult (65+ years): 7–8 hours
Sleeping does not come easily to all unfortunately so here are some things one can do to help improve their sleep quality.
- Avoiding napping when you have already slept enough
- Go to bed around the same time every night.
- More active during the day.
- Reducing stress through exercise, therapy, or other means.
- Try not to go onto your phone an hour before you actually go to bed
