Paul McCartney released his 18th solo studio album, McCartney III, on the 18th of December 2020. The album is a continuation of his previous self-titled albums: McCartney and McCartney II. As with the previous self-titled albums, Paul McCartney plays all the instruments in this newest album. McCartney III was recorded during the lockdown period or as Paul McCartney refers to it ‘made in rockdown’.
As someone that has rarely listened to Paul McCartney’s solo music I can really appreciate the somber mood of this album. ‘Women and wives’ stood out to me as a song as it talks of the influence we as people have on each other and the future. A strong contrast to ‘Women and wives’ is ‘Find my way’ as it is an upbeat and cheerful song , until you listen to the words and realize it is about fear and how that grows as you get older. McCartney III was a departure from my regular listening but it is the most refreshing album I have heard all year and I believe that the songs can relate to anyone.
Hannah, a fan of Paul McCartney says ‘As a classic rock fan, one can't be picky when it comes to new music being released even if songs aren't as strong. But when it came to McCartney III, I've found that I genuinely enjoy every song. The range of genres and styles in this album is just more proof of McCartney being supernaturally flexible. What makes the album so special to me is that he's taken the past and he's molded and shaped it to become the present, he's taken a bad situation and made it productive and worthwhile, or in his words, took a sad song and made it better. The album had my 2020 ending on a good note and I can only look forward to future music.’ Both an avid fan of Paul McCartney and one who seldom listens to his Solo music can appreciate the innovation of the album and I encourage anyone who enjoys listening to more experimental music or enjoys classic rock to listen to McCartney III.
